About Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA)

The Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) was established in 1962 and moved to its present purpose-built premises in Tsim Sha Tsui from City Hall in Central in 1991. In August 2015, the museum closed its doors for extensive renovation to expand its exhibition space and upgrade its facilities. The renovation project was undertaken by the Architectural Services Department to create a unique identity with modern architectural features for the HKMoA. The renovated complex features a new glass façade and transparent design, which increase the HKMoA’s visibility and prominence on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. 

The renovated museum now offers 12 instead of seven galleries, including in the museum’s new annex block a 9m tall double-height gallery, which can display large-sized artwork. Two other high-ceilinged galleries have also been added on the extended roof floor of the museum to increase the total exhibition area by about 40 percent, from approximately 7,000m² to approximately 10,000m².

To enhance the visibility and accessibility, the reception lobby has been relocated from the first floor to the ground floor, and the museum now features four entrances that facilitate visitor entry from different directions. Also, the first floor of the renovated museum has been converted into a multi-function hall for thematic exhibitions and cultural events.
